Are the IRC glory days over?

I used to live on IRC.

Seriously… I had a serious IRC issue. Every evening, I’d come home, fire up mIRC, and hit the channels. Stormcenter, Icehouse, Darkstar… those were my haunts. I’d stop for a few moments to eat dinner, then get back to it until I was too tired to continue.

Yeah… I was an addict.

Before I totally geek out… for those who don’t know, IRC stands for Internet Relay Chat. It was a way to connect to a server using a client (mIRC, pIRCh, etc.) and chat with other people.

Apparently, the chat is gone.

I’ve made a few attempts over the past couple of weeks to find a channel where people were talking and discovered something new… no one chats on IRC. Sure, there’s channels by the billions, there’s “people” in thus said channels (it’s hard to tell a person from a bot until they say something), but no one is talking. I hit at least 50 promising channels on efnet… not one real live human being.

I kind of miss the old days. The fun I had with Icey (aka: Eve), Demios, Bagheera, Cricket, Chase, and the rest of the crew… oh… those were good times! (Painting Chase’s ass blue was a massive pass time for me).

I guess it’s time to give it up, uninstall my good friend, mIRC, and say goodbye to it all. That is… unless you know of a good server/channel where people still talk (if so… SHARE, DAMN IT!).

EDIT: Travis (aka: damaged_one) pointed out the horrid typos in this post and then told me that beer and blogs don’t mix.ร‚ย  Well, they do mix… just not well ๐Ÿ™‚

I so totally agree with you.

I hardly ever go to IRC now, and when I do, it’s in a super-secrit channel of a peer-to-peer group I’m involved with. The thing is, there’s bloody 30 people idling in the channel and noone talks (until I pester them into it).

Stormcenter is still there, but sadly only Baggy and Cricket seem to be the non-bots in #Livefire and aren’t talking ๐Ÿ™

I’ll go IRC whoring and let you know if I find anything good. Of course, they’ll have to get over the shock of me before I can slowly prepare them for the shock of you lol. Us two together in one channel can be damaging to the sanity of those unprepared (but in a good way) ๐Ÿ™‚

Tone, you will be happy to know that mIRC is alive and well and highly used in the Navy. Unfortunately, unless you have a secure terminal in your house, no one is invited. But don’t worry, we just use it to fire our Tomahawks and other bad guy killing devices we use…..boring!! We do on occasion share sports scores though……ie Fire missle 2! Oh and BTW…Seattle lost to New York 14-21.
