You say spyware like it’s a bad thing

With the release of Battlefield 2142, people are spazing out.

Shack News released the following information:

When you open the box, a big slip of paper falls out first, preceeding any discs or manuals. The slip of paper says, essentially, that 2142 includes monitoring software which runs while your computer is online, and records “anonymous” information like your IP address, surfing habits (probably via cookie scans), and other “computing habits” in order to report this information back to ad companies and ad servers, which generates in-game ads.

Now, I can live with certain in-game ads (though apparently there will be Dodge truck and Neon ads in the bleak, futuristic world of 2142), but including a lengthy description – outside of even the Eula – seems to indicate even EA knows that this is some shady borderline spyware shit. I don’t support it and won’t be buying 2142 (for a host of other reasons, too).

The Dice development team (the people who actually created the game) had the following to say about it:

In a better mood

Today is a much better day.

It's a beautiful morning!

Sure, my back is making it’s presence known (in a fairly big way), but I could really care less. Today is the day that my new game, Battlefield 2142 hits the store shelves. I pre-ordered 4 copies (one for me, one for each of my kids, and one for the extra kid who almost lives at my house). Last night, I got a call from the store I ordered it from to confirm that the game would be in stock today.

w00t!!

I pulled the demo down last week and both my sons and I have been playing it as a team. That’s good father-son time, and it is incredibly fun! Sure, we don’t go fishing or camping… but we do go and whoop some serious ass online, and that’s way more fun (and less stinky and dirty).

My boys and I are more than willing to give you a dirt nap.

Other news:

For those who care, I have my appointment for the nerve induction test next tuesday. For those who don’t know what a nerve induction test is, I shall explain:

They place probes (read: long damn needles) into my back and lower leg such that they come in contact with the sciatic nerve. Then they apply electricity to one end. The test is to see how long it takes for the electrical charge to go from one end to the other. Apparently, this is used as a form of torture in some countries (it hurts like all hell, but doesn’t do actual damage if the charge is low enough).

Good times!!

And finally:

I’ve been promised that my chance to rule the world with an iron fist is coming. Honest! Once again, I’ll let you know what’s up with that when I can.

Cranky pants

I’m in a mood.

I'm cranky... damn cranky!

My back is bothering me, I hate taking the damn hydocodone, nothing is working like it should at work, and it’s friggin’ cold in my cube.

meh…

I’m waiting for smething big…. I’ve been waiting for it for months now. They keep telling me that it’s coming, but it’s not here yet, and that makes me cranky too.

double meh

Friday the 13th

It’s friday the 13th…. in October! Oooooh… spooky.

Of course this would be the day that it would hit the fan at work. Customers want magic to happen, everyone who knows how to perform magic is out, and I’m scrambeling to get it done.

*sigh*

On the bright side, it’s still friday (regardless of the data) and my new hard drive (to replace the SATA drive I purchased last week) is in my hot little hands. I purchased the SATA drive to replace the dying hard drive in my PC. Much to my horror upon opening the case, I don’t have SATA capability (I could have sworn I did!). I guess an upgrade is in the works for me.

My new drive, a 320GB Hitachi Deskstar, is EIDE and will for sure work. I’ve never purchased a drive from Hitachi before, so hopefully it’ll give me good service (I’m a Seagate fan).

Update: I got the customer “insert magic here” thing with the help of Mr. TEC (aka: uber geek and god of all bytes and bits). It cost me a few cookies from the cafeteria, but was well worth it.

🙂
